The Flower- Fed Buffaloes

The poem we are going to analyze is called The flower-fed buffaloes that was written by Vachel Lindsay. The analysis will be based by the poems structure, subject matter, language and a brief conclusion. The flower-fed buffaloes is about how everything is slowly being killed like in this case buffaloes and not just them but at the same time how there habitats are getting destroyed also it can be said that the landscape that this poem reflects to the reader is mainly plants so we can match this as if it is spring time. Another thing we can see of the flowers is that they are also dying this takes part by the different type of locomotion’s and industrialization.

The poem contains a single stanza with 15 lines and it is a sonnet poem. All of this ideas that everything is slowly dying can be mention by the way the author starts to unroll her ideas from the start of the poem to the end and at last we can see a repetition of the words ‘’lying low’’ that reflect death. We can not reflect just death in this part of the poem but also we can see how the buffaloes suffer this can be seen by the sounds that are interpreted. We can see that also that maybe buffaloes are moving away from where they are to new places were they will be safer ‘’ wheels and wheels and wheels spin by’’ the effect of this is that it can reflect to us a type of migration not just this can be reflected but also from another view we can take this as the sound of the locomotives. Another thing that can be reflected by this poem is the way that it we can see allusions to nature. As I mentioned before we can see that this place is being destroyed but indeed we can say that plants are being replaced ‘’ Swept away by the wheat’’ this can tell us that plants are being destroyed and replaced by wheat.

The poem flower-fed buffaloes has no continues rhythm this means that some of the words do rhyme but not all of them and since there is no rhyme there is also no rhythm. In the poem we can find an image that can be more like a sensory description ‘’perfume grass’’ this image is describing a bit more the landscape but mostly it is talking of how everything was before as the tittle that is also written in the past. Another image in the poem is ‘’wheels and wheels’’ also we can see a repetition in this line. The language in this poem as we can see it is not too difficult to understand even though they are some words that are not easy to understand another thing is that we can see how the author reflects everything through small words a good example is ‘’lying low’’ because this is when the reader gets a full effect of the hole poem. Another thing that can be noticed in the language it that it is a happy calm and can sound as a song type tone. The poem as it can be seen is structured in a long way since it has a long single stanza.

In conclusion we can see than the author Vachel Lindsay has interpretate the poem in a way which the readers can reflect different ideas not just a single one also we can take in count the way she describes everything which gives a big effect to readers. As we can see the poems main theme is the nature so this can say a lot of the author and how much she cares about the nature. In my opinion this is a good poem because it is easy to understand and at the same time we can really catch what the author is trying to say to the readers.
